Auto Train car containers being unloaded

We made it to Lorton, VA on time. It took about an hour to unload the car and be on our way, drove about 30 miles south to Fredericksburg VA. We checked into our hotel, unloaded, and called about getting a tour guide setup for tomorrow. We'll tour some of the lesser battlefields today on our own.

Trip on the Auto Train was great. Met a lot of nice people, had a very nice dinner, and a pretty good night's sleep. The room was very small and sleeping on a moving train took a bit of getting use to. Still, we did sleep most of the night.

Today we toured the Spotsylvania Courthouse Battlefield. Saw all the main sites within the park. The only areas of real interest were the “mule shoe” and the “bloody angle“. It didn't take but about an hour so we went on to the courthouse downtown. Next to the courthouse is the present day museum which was a church. Behind the church are a number of grave sites. I had been told by one of my aunts that some Durrett’s are buried there. One had served in the CSA army. So, I wanted to check it out. It turns out to be true (see pictures). The museum had a number of documents including a map of the grave sites, church records of the members and a book titled “The Durrett’s of Virginia”. It was a lot to review and we only had a couple of hours before they closed. Lots of information but I didn’t find anything that tied the CSA officer / doctor to anyone in my family. Someday I hope to find I’m a descendent of someone who served during the civil war.
