Crossbow and antler nut from 15th Century

Urquhart Castle is located on the shores of Loch Ness. This was a large fortification on a hill overlooking the lake. Much of the fortress was built in the 13th Century on the site of an older Iron-Age fort. Little remains of the great fortress, as it was partially destroyed by the English during the Jacobite Uprising in the early 18th Century. Since then, like most abandoned ruined castles, the cut stone from the site was carried away by locals to be use as building material for many other buildings in the area.
