Eilean Dolan Castle

This is also a privately owned castle, but is open to the public. It is also situated on a small island, but is now connected to the mainland by a narrow bridge. The first castle was built here in the 13th Century. The castle changed form over the centuries, including new works in the 15th, 16th, and 17th Centuries. However the castle was almost completely destroyed in 1719 in the Jaccobite Uprising. The English used 343 kegs of gunpowder to reduce the castle to rubble. The castle sat in ruins for nearly 200 years until the early 20th Century when a wealthy Scot undertook to rebuild the castle from scratch. It took him over 20 years and it was completed in 1932 at a cost of over 250,000 pounds. Now it is one of Scotland's most photographed castles. Inside the castle it is quite modern (at least late 19th Century style) in style and function.
