Entry #11 May 25, 2011
On Wednesday, we met our driver, Raffaele, for an all-day excursion along the Amalfi Coast. This was a drive we did not want to do ourselves nor did we want to be herded into a bus, so we followed Rick Steves advice and "splurged" for the private driver.
Stopping along the way was super and Raffaele knew all the best photo opportunities. As we headed to our first town stop we were able to view the coast which included a small set of privately owned islands purported to belong to Rudolf Nureyev. There was an RV parked nearby and Tom introduced himself to the owners. In the town of Positano we saw churches, and pleasant walkways. There were small beaches that were part of seaside resorts and since we had decided not to go to the famous Blue Grotto on Capri (usually packed with tourists and rude boatmen) we found a blue grotto along the coast that was less crowded and probably just as beautiful.
Our next stop was at Amalfi where we had lunch and visited more churches. Then on to Ravello which is up the hill above Amalfi. We visited the church and stayed a while since it has begun to sprinkle rain. After a capuchino in the square, we returned to our car and headed back to Sorrento.
That night we had dinner at a small wine bar near our apartment that had magnificent food and excellent wine. It was a place worth going back to - and we did.
