Checked out of the Paraa Lodge @ 10:00am, but not before Jan and Heidi got their last free internet fix while we were loading our bags. We then proceeded to drive to the top of Murchison Falls along a road that can best be described as more potholes and crevasses than actual “road” On the way, we saw a family of Colobus monkeys along the road-apparently a pretty rare sight according to our driver. They were black & white and the size of a small chimp and not at all excited to see us. The road to the Falls was also covered in mica, making it sparkle like it was littered with diamonds. Once we reached the top, the view of the Falls in all its fury was a memorable sight- like the Colorado River at 3x the height. The power of the water was amazing as it carved a canyon through the rock. We then began the trek back to Kampala, stopping in Masindi at a hotel/restaurant for lunch. This would turn out to be our biggest mistake to this point-a simple order of soup, grilled cheese, fries , fish and “chicken flakes”(no, it’s not like chicken cereal, but kind of like chicken sticks) that should take 20-30 minutes to prepare in an American restaurant took almost 2 hours in Africa and was served one plate at a time as we all sat in anticipation each time the waiter exited the kitchen, praying to Jesus he was coming to our table-overall we batted about .200.
We finally made it back to Kampala after a 5 hour trip in the midst of rush hour. All I can say is that driving in the midst of autos, buses, motorbikes, bikes and pedestrians zigging in and out INCHES in front of you constantly must be similar to what hell is like-especially if you’re in the front seat. Once we made it back to the guesthouse in one piece and nonstop prayer, we had dinner which included the BEST pineapple in the world. Jan and Heidi bought some jewelry and artifacts for resale in the States to continue supporting the mission, and Rose & Angela from the Amani mission came to say goodbye. Then it was off to bed as we had to wake up @ 3:00 am for our flight out of Uganda.
