2011 Gary & Linda - North to Alaska travel blog

Got set up on Pat's Point CG in Keyhole State Park in...

Had to go see Devil's Tower. This view is from about 5...

This view is from 2 miles, but is zoomed in to 250...

Took this shot in the visitor center parking lot.

And this from the path around the base.

All those columns are each 15 to 25 feet in diameter.

Compare the stone columns with the pine tree growing there.

Two climbers are near the top on the right.

Can you see them now? They are still there.

A Native American placed this prayer cloth on this tree.

Some trees had several prayer clothes and prayer bundles on them.

When we got back to the parking lot we found this curiosity.

This explains it.

Samples of his art.

2011-06-03 Devil's Tower

We only drove 91 miles today, but fought strong head winds all the way. We'll be lucky if we got 6 mpg. We landed at Keyhole State Park just north of I-90 and about 22 miles due south of Devil's Tower National Monument in Wyoming. After getting set up and unhitched, we headed out to Devil's Tower.

Devil's Tower is the country's first National Monument established by Teddy Roosevelt. It is also a sacred place for spiritual ceremonies for several tribes of Native Americans. DT was also featured in the 1970's movie, A Close Encounter of the Third Kind. It is a very impressive monolith standing 867 feet above the surrounding valley. The top is about as big as football field. Rock climbers come from all over the world to climb its imposing sides.

Back at the campground the wind had settled down to a gentle breeze and we were able to get a good night's rest.

Later,

Gary
