Well so much for that plan. Instead of fighting the weekday traffic in ATL we decided to just stay around Stone Mountain and save the downtown trip for Saturday.
We put a lot of miles on our shoes today. Got out of the bus around 11:00 and went to see some stuff like the Covered Bridge, the Granite Quarry and the Grist Mill, then it was off to do the Skyride to the top of the mountain. It was pretty neat and surprisingly cooler at the top because of the breeze – but not comfy by any stretch. Temp today “only” got to 95 so I guess we got a real break. We stayed up top for about an hour, then we went down to the museum to see the Civil War and the rock carving displays. The carving on the face of the mountain is very impressive – I don’t remember all the dimensions, but overall I think it is about 190’x75’. The whole story of how long it took and the technical part of how they did it is really neat.
We also did the train ride around the base of the mountain, toured the Antebellum Plantation and, oh yeah, saw the Yogi Bear 4-D movie. While I wouldn’t normally consider going to a Yogi Bear movie, we had to wait for the train and the theater is air conditioned so I willingly walked in. And I voluntarily went in every souvenir shop just because they had A/C. That should give you an idea how nasty it is here in the middle of the day.
After we slithered back to the bus, we watched The Big Chill, soaked up a lot of A/C, then took showers and hit the road to find some pizza and a Publix. Yes, we are in Publix territory. Thank God. WalMart serves a purpose, but it is a narrow window of purpose. In other words, if there ain’t nothing else it will do just fine. Sort of.
Now it is update time for me, while Michele does some laundry, then it will be Double Stuff Oreos, cold milk, and bedtime. Life is good.
