|Today we hiked to Fox Glacier - how cool is that! (Excuse the pun). We were disappointed that there were no mints though- ha ha. Seriously, it was brilliant - literally. It is the first glacier that we have ever seen and we were amazed to see how blue it was. We thought it would be perfectly white. We didn't do the ice hike that many adventurous people do but we were more than happy with our hike though the rugged mountain track to the stunning glacier at the end. We then went on to find somewhere to stay for the night and are staying in the Rainforest Retreat which really is amongst a rainforest and has all sorts of accommodation from camper van sites, hostel places and self contained apartments. We had decided that if it was raining we would book into the hostel but if it was dry we would sleep in the Spaceship as normal. When we arrived the sky was clear so we booked a pitch for our Spaceship. About an hour later, it was torrential rain! Talk about timing! Actually it turned out to be magical. We had booked a private spa and sauna at the resort for the princely sum of just £1.50 per person. It was pretty special sitting in the hot tub, surrounded by trees and the rain falling on the make piece roof above. We then dried off in the sauna before walking about 200 metres down the road to another Spring Pool resort set amongst the rainforest. Similarly to the one in Lake Tekapo, there were 3 pools of varying temperatures up to 40 degrees. The difference was that in Lake Tekapo we were surrounded by the mountains and lake, whilst here we were surrounded by the rain forest. By now it was dark so felt very special being surrounded by trees whilst the rain fell (heavily) from above. Fortunately a tarpaulin covered the centre of the pool but it was also fun to sit around the edge with rainfall on our heads whilst our bodies soaked in the hot temperatures. One disconcerting thing was that at times it felt like a scene from Jurassic Park as growling sounds emanated from the spring pools. What another incredible day - ice glaciers in the morning, private spa in the afternoon and hot spring pools in the evening. Not bad huh!
