Spent a wonderful week with Helen in Port MacDonnell,. about 25kms directly south of Mt Gambier, in SA. Helen and I joined the WRANS in the same intake in 1967, became Communicators and have been friends ever since. She still works very hard at both the Cafe and doing her Aged Care stint, but, in between her work hours, we had a great time. She showed us around the rugged "Shipwreck Coast" of the area, we spent some days in Mount Gambier and others were spent at home relaxing. When in the Mount, Pete and I did a tour of the Blue Lake (not so blue at this time of the year - goes Blue on Nov 11th each year, then fades in March. Is a brilliant sapphire blue in the correct season. Still has a deep blue tinge but will be grey soon, although the water coming out of it, has a definite blue tinge.) We visited the beautiful Umpherston Sinkhole (though I deleted all the photos off my camera by accident!!) and the Engelbrecht sinkhole/caves system. Right in the heart of the city, is the amazing Cave Garden - huge sinkhole. The whole area is world famous for its cave systems and sinkholes, as well as the volcanos- Blue Lake, Crater lake, & Mt Schenk, just to mention a few.
We planned on leaving on Sunday 22nd, but the weather forecast is atrocious for Sunday and onwards, so we decided to run ahead of the incoming storms and get to Ballarat on Saturday, which is where we are now. Drove around the coast on Highway 1 to Warrnambool, then headed NE to Ballarat. Will be here at least a week, and get as much seen as possible, weather permitting!!
