All decked out in our mud shoes, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, rain panchos, safari hats, water bottles and cameras we boaqrd a small speed boat at 5:30 am for a 70 mile 1 1/2 hour ride up the Amazon and then the Napa river for breakfast at the Exploranapa Lodge and our jungle adventure. Along the way we saw children on docks waiting for a river bus to take them to school and houses on stilts. You can really see how high the water level is. At one point the Amazon was so wide it looked like a lake. Seasonally, the Amazon can vary in depth from 30 feet to 45 feet in depth. The Amazon begins in the mountians of southern Peru and the travels north the east through Brazil where it empties in to the Atlantic ocean. It is 40 miles wide at its mouth in Brazil.
After breakfast we walk through the jungle forest, slipping and sliding on our trail. The jungle forest has 80,000 species of trees. The forest has 4 layers, - the forest floor, the understory, the canopy and the emergent. We arrive at our destination for one of the great highlights of our trip. The 1/4 mile Canopy walk - a suspended walkway up to 118 feet above the canopy. We had 15 stations along the way.
