Time for a Rest - Orleans

Day 11-14 May 8 – 11th

Just missed Johan D'Arc but every thing else has worked out well these last few days. Two lovely days of cycling, good weather -rather too hot on one day at 26C - and great cycle routes. Vinyards, orchards, rivers, beautiful meadows in full flower, and some lovely towns and villages. Amboise stood out with its medieval church and towering castle and quaint streets. The trees and their blossom are worth mentioning at this moment.

Camped at Montlouis-sur-Loire for 1st night (74k). Met a couple of nice English ladies who had set out for the South of France but decided to go further as they liked the campsite and region so much. With a nearby rail bridge across the Loire it was a bit noisy to us.

The next night was Huisseau-sur-Cosson (84k) just beyond Blois. The end of this day was mentally tiring as the 1st two sites were closed and we had to backtrack and then go on a further 11k, mainly uphill in very humid conditions. Best campsite so far, run by an old couple who took great pride in what they did. Each pitch had its own well-established hedges round it. Shared the site with 3 other couples. As you may have gathered the sites are not doing a lot trade at the moment.

On Day 12, May 10th which is Sarah White's birthday moved on to Orleans (74k). Not such a good day. So much depends on the quality of the road or track surface. On a smooth route national 100k can in effort and mental fatigue equate to 60k on tracks with a poor quality surface. However, we are not here to just cover distance we also want to see and enjoy the lands we pass through.

Today is a rest day. I am physically and mentally jaded. Sue wanted to go on but acquiesced eventually. Did some bike maintenance, mainly on my disc brakes, then went a bike shop to see if a professional could do any better. No was the answer, I then had to resort to my years of engineering training at the taxpayers expense and that worked! I can now stop my bike, which is quite useful. We have also done body maintenance, rubbing in creams and doing nothing
