Today’s lesson trenitalia. So seven hours and four trains later… we have arrived in Cinque Terra. Right now it is around 7:30pm here 10:30am at your place. We are sitting on our deck looking out at the Ligurian Sea and listening to the waves pound against the rocks. Oh, did I mention that we just finished our first bottle of wine and have started on the next. This was worth the trip.. just this.
The town we are staying in is Riomaggiore, it is the last of the five towns heading south from the Italian Riviera. I don’t think that I can pay it justice with my limited skills at writing, I’ll give it a try.
We ran from train to train.. this one waited for us because we were late getting into Siestre Levante. Now, you probably think that was because they knew we were coming… but it is just the way they run the trains here, they wait until one arrives .
The next trick was to figure out A if we had gotten on the correct train and B where do we get off? We knew the town, but were not sure where it was on the route. No one was on the train with us…except the conductor and I assume someone was driving, but who knows. Oh I forgot to mention that when we got on the last train, I insisted that we were to get in a car with the number two on the side, because we were supposed to be in the number 2 train… well it was 2nd class and we had to run to the next to the last car and we were at number 11 and the train was ready to leave. So it made for an uncomfortable few moments after we finally got on the train. The “look.”
The train ambled down the track and stopped at each station for a few minutes..no one got on or off at any of the stops. Then we hit the first of the towns Monterosso, everyone in Italy was there waiting to get on.. and they did and then got off..on and off until we hit Riomaggiore. We got off the train and followed the directions to the Mar Mar, it was up hill, all the way lugging the suitcases. Then we got our apartment key and this lovely man led us to it. First up two flights of stairs then a left turn, down a “street” (the streets are about three feet wide) then down a flight then turn left and up a flight then turn left and down two flighs. Now when I say stairs.. one assumes they are symmetric. Next entry pictures..we are in Lucca and there is so much to share about Cinque Terra.
