Hayling After the 5-4 Win

The Teams

Day 1 to 4 28th April – 1st May

Left Gorron this morning - eventually. Too many goodbyes and a rather daunting number of 'bon courage'. Had a good overnight crossing from Portsmouth to St Malo and then made it to Fourger (87k) and then on to Gorron (32k) the next day. Made it in time for lunch with Duchemins. Also there were Karinne and Christian Garnier. A simple french 4-course lunch with nice wine and then on to football game between Hayling Utd under 14s and their Gorronnais counterparts. Very exciting it was with boys coming out on top 5-4 with a goal in the last 2 mins! A reception in the Marie followed where suddenly I was expected to reply to the Mayor's address. Supper for us and footballers was at the Creperie. Sue and I were very impressed with our lads, they great ambassadors. Not only had they raised about 1800 by their own efforts for the trip, they played a good game, and had fun whilst being well behaved afterwards. Spent the night with Michael and Cathy Duchemin. Managed to see Laura, with baby Manon, and Orphelie. On departure today called in Jean Claude and Roselyn Speyer out near Ernee. Finally left at 12.30, in the rain, laden with sandwiches, 2 loaves of brioche and some orange drink! . Jean Claude led the way in his car thro the streets of Ernee until he was satisfied we were on the right road. Such kindness from our French friends. Made Vitre a little late but in the dry. 55k
