This morning, we didn’t queue up with all the other passengers for the tours of Florence and Pisa. We had been there in the fall, so we had a plan to go to Lucca. Mom and Dad had been there in 2008. A bike ride around the old city wall is a highly recommended excursion, and we wanted to do it with the kids.
Avis rent a car made it very simple. The rental car I had booked online was waiting on the pier for us. We just had breakfast and got in the car and started driving to Lucca. We made a quick stop at the tourist info centre, and then had a time out for the kids who were spending a bit too much time poking each other in the tight back seat, and quickly we were within the city walls.
A nice treat for us was that our good friends from Provence, the Sottaks, and their dog Chico were staying in a house nearby on their holidays. We met in the Piazza Napoleone and had a great Tuscan lunch. We then walked the streets, and enjoyed visiting the square in Lucca, that is actual oval and an old roman amphitheatre that was converted into houses and stores in the Middle Ages. Ice cream, café macchiato and some tourist shopping for sunglasses completed the great afternoon.
We returned to the boat but were told we couldn’t give our friends a tour for security reasons. So we said farewell and started getting ready for dinner. The atmosphere on the ship is great. While we are at the 8pm dinner sitting, the crowds of Spanish passengers waiting for the 10:15 dinner seating are definitely ready to party. They even set up an after midnight buffet, for those who need more food after the late night Broadway style show. Clearly the Spanish want to party all night long. Maybe it is the free drinks that makes everyone so vivacious?
