Michael and Kate's World Tour travel blog

Today we traveled 5 hours by bus from the capital of Zagreb to the second largest city in Croatia, Split, on the Adriatic coast. The ride was very interesting, as Zagreb is far inland and we were able to see much of the Croatian countryside. The land between Zagreb and Split is beautiful - alternating between small hills, lush forests, and large snow-capped mountains with wide open plains below. It reminded us somewhat of Colorado in the early summer. Along the road, we passed through many small villages. Most of the houses were rather plain, though some had a more germanic/austrian influence. We often saw signs for Zimmer - the german word for rooms. Many of the inland Croatians rent out rooms to tourists. We also noticed that many of the buildings, especially near Zagreb, still have large bullet holes in them from the recent war with the Serbs.
