Interesting what one can learn aboard an airplane with your father on your way to Spain... The Marcial Family Lore was shared this evening in 40H&J. Apparently, as the story goes, my great grandfather was not only Presbyterian, but because of that became a useful figure when the Brits were in the Southeastern part of Spain to mine coal. Since the Brits were mostly Presbyterian, my great grandfather went to, essentially, liaise with them. Well over time, the man, who was as I am told, charismatic as all get out, became very popular with the locals and his support grew to the time when he was elected into the democratic government of Spain, La Repubica. He served as a senator for the country for some time until Franco no longer wanted a democracy to exist... why share power when you can have it all to oneself... So, as one can imagine, things become more and more tulmulteous which is when he sent chidren out of the country to school, which my grandfather did... Eventually it became untenable enough for those serving in the government that the only thing left to do was to flee...
It was at that time the President of Spain suggested my great grandfather head to Washington DC, but speaking no English, he asked if he could go to the Paris of the West: Havana, Cuba. So be it, he did and went to Havana to be the Ambassador to Cuba on behalf of Spain... So grandpa came to the US to study and stayed when he met the woman he was to marry. He found himself a little school in Northwestern hills of New Jersey and had two chidren ... one of which would ater marry my mother, who's family lineage goes to the United Kingdom via the Mayflower. And so the family lore goes... here we are, headed to Spain...
It is more clear now that I shall have to embark on a trip to Jolly od England with my mom to visit the other half... Do I hear an excuse to travel before I have even returned from this trip?!?!?! Perhaps, but do you blame me?!?!!
So I looked out the window tonight, in the middle of the night... so high up, such a clear sky... I must have seen about three or four little dippers... lol so the alignment is quite different at 10,000 or so feet, but it was wildly beautiful and it made me think about the dreams I had achildchid thinking about space fight... If I hadn't known better, the wing might might had been called the Northern Star in my sleepiness... It was gorgeous.... absolutely still up above the lights, beaming in from far away lands, looking at the blaze from the past... it is amazing what contraptions we have invented to defy the natural laws, like gravity... It really puts you in your place if you think about it for a while... I did, as I drifted back to a little slumber...
