Moreraki Boulders

Limestone sculpture in Oamaru

We decided that there were so many large sheep stations in this area because of the Scottish settlers.

Left Dunedin as we head north back to Christchurch. Stops along the way include the Moreraki Boulders at Kaihinaki. Huge round boulders in the bay. Second stop was a town we came upon called Oamaru. The sign stated it was the only Victorian town in NZ. The refurbished old buildings contained shops. Verne stopped in to the old grainry for whiskey tasting. Off we were to our next little town, Timaru (which reminded us of Tiramisu) where the shops were art deco buildings similar to Napier. Our final stop was at the Temuka Pottery shop.

We crossed the longest bridge in NZ; it spans the Rakata River just south of Christchurch.

As we enter Christchurch from the south we see a few more buildings destroyed by the earthquake, we just don’t know which quake. The streets to the city center remained blocked and guarded.

We returned to the tavern we had dinner at last week. Tonight we noticed there were vacancies in the motels that were full last week. We decided it was because the workers probably went home for the weekend. Verne found out from the workers at the tavern that there has been some group of military personnel from NC helping in the area.

After 18 days, 3 plane trips, 3 bus trips, 1 train trip, 4 boat trips, 1 long car trip, some 4500kms our road trip in NZ comes to an end. We have had a wonderful time. Tomorrow we must leave at 4 Am to get our flight to Melbourne, where I will set foot on my 6th continent. Ali & Peter will leave us to go home and we will get on a plane to Hobart to start the next leg of our trip…Tasmania.
