Cindy and our driver at the Tsunami memorial
Our last sunset.
Unawatuna is the place that will make me want to go back to Sri Lanka. I was really sad about leaving most of the team. Almost everyone went home right after the build was done. But a few of us; Cindy, Beth, Kathy, Thomas, John and myself had a few extra days and decided to go south.
During the drive down we saw much evidence of the 2004 Tsunami. They have built a memorial where 10,000 people perished, the most in one place in Sri Lanka due to the Tsunami. Very moving.
The road down to Unawatuna you see the ocean on one side and small homes and vegetation on the other side. When you come into a town, they pretty much all look the same. Businesses in small buildings - some like shacks. I was getting a little worried, but then we turned down this road and we were in Unawatuna! I pretty much fell in love immediately. Its not posh, pretty much down and dirty, but with this charm that I absolutely loved.
We went to the Peace Temple and to Galle. Galle is an old walled city that is now in ruins. There are a few buildings that are being renovated - and you can just see how beautiful this city could be.
We had such a great time, the food was wonderful, the beach gorgeous, the pace just right after all the work we had just done. It was a wonderful ending to a wonderful trip. Here are some of my thoughts when I was having breakfast one morning
