A relaxing morning exploring the tiny village of Karamea.basically like Quemado..a gas station, general store, and information center..ONly 92 students in K-12 in the entire town. We visited a few local walkways, bird sanctuaries, and saw a wood cutting demo by competitive woodcutters who had the sharpest axes I have ever seen. they were preparing for a local competition this weekend in town..they also compete with log cutting against australia..their major rival. The guy who demonstrated was 73 yrs old and just awsome with his axes..unbelievalbe skill, technique and strength. Tomorow we head by bus to Greymouth and stop along the way at the Pancake rocks along the coast. Then we board the trans-apline traIN AND travel to Methven. We supposed to go to Christchurch but plans were altered due to the big quake there last month.
