Farm land like home

Making our way through the mountains

Skirting around lakes

Changing landscapes

Unloading the bus

A demonstration passing our hotel

Showing us the different cuts of meat

Still drizzling, onto a local bus – quite comfortable – and we head north to the town of Osorno, then east to the mountains. We notice that our faithful dog was checking out all the guests as they left the hotel.

Wonderful farmlands initially. Diary, beef, raspberry and blue berry farms. Some subsistence farms in poor repair, others wealthy ranches and the buildings and pastures reflect this. One very large dairy company seen from the bus.

Gradually we climb into the mountains, we can see many peaks covered in snow in the distance. The bus winds its way through the valleys and along side the lakes.

We stop at the Chilean border – stand in line and eventually have our passports stamped and we are cleared to go. Quite chilly.

Then an hours drive to the Argentina border. Why they cannot do it all at once? One again we cue, have our passports stamped and are allowed in.

Eventually we arrive at Bariloche – a town on the Lago Naheul Huapi. What a picturesque place. The lake is surrounded by the most magnificent mountains between 2500 to 3200 metres with a dusting of snow from the recent cold weather.

Time to change money, get Argentina Pesos from the ATM and off to a café to treat ourselves to some chocolate – a speciality here, and costly given this is a tourist town in summer and a ski town in winter.

The evening meal is at a restaurant specialising in steak – another Argentinean treat. The size of the steaks and separate salads substantial so a number of us share our meals - the red meat eaters of the group are in heaven.

Afterwards a number of the group visit an Irish pub to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.
