Montevideo is the third national capital we've visited on this journey; Buenas Aires and Santiago being the first two. Montevideo is similar to BA. The cultures of Argentina and Uruguay are closer in personality than either is to Chile; the former two are more Italian, while Chile has a more German & English influence. Uruguay has by far the most pronounced 'Matte flavor'. Far more so than in either of the other two countries do you see people walking the streets, riding the buses, sitting on park benches holding / drinking from their matte cups & straw, with the ever present thermos jug of agua caliente not far away. The weather has been splendid, and the cool Atlantic Ocean breezes a very welcome variance from the desert and jungle climes. Montevideo has a lot of architecture from the late 1800's to about 1930. Two and three story buildings with ornate facades; some in 'declining health', but many in very good condition. The streets are lined with tall Sycamore trees, such that walking the sun dappled old neighborhoods, breezes shuffling the fallen leaves about, is very pleasurable. Ciao for now
