There's Gold in Them There Hills

We arrived....this is Canada!

Border crossings from the northern states into Canada are usually busy, crowded, and sometimes a pain in the ____ ...well you know. We had Sam's papers ready (something in all the trips we have made they never ask for); I had my birth certificate, and our new passports. Remember you cannot come back into the States without a passport now. And remember that Alaska IS part of the United States.....hehehe People do forget that, some people think Alaska is only a territory. In fact when we lived there, we have been asked by tourists where they could get Alaska money, or we have been told they were from the USA, and a few questions about the Alaska government......lol.....seriously.

We came through the border at Sumas on Route 9. We took country roads and never intended to cross close to Vancouver. We would like to stay away from bigger cities on this trip. We are on the "West Access Route" to the Alcan Hwy. There is also an East Access. Most people think the Alcan starts at the border of Canada and the US just south of Vancouver B.C. Not true. The true beginning of the Alcan Hwy is clear up at Dawson Creek. The East Access starts in Great Falls, MT and crosses into Canada at Sweetgrass, MT and Coutts, AB, Canada. The West Access begins at Seattle and going up through Sumas just south of Abbotsford, B.C. We took the Trans-Canada Hwy (Route 1) to Hope, B.C. There are a few campgrounds around Hope and we are set up at Wild Rose. Pictured above is a carving on a large evergreen tree between our site and the next door neighbors. We went into town for dinner and took a few other pictures of woodcarvings all over town. This is an interesting little place. We are going to stay here an extra day and drive back to Minter Gardens....we passed it with the trailer in tow.

The roads are good, the weather is pleasant, and we are enjoying ourselves. This close to the US border, there is no problem using US currency, but we will stop at a bank tomorrow and exchange our cash to Canadian dollars. We also have traveler's checks, but most Canadian businesses will accept US dollars and figure in the exchange rate themselves. When we leave Hope, we will be taking Route 97 north. From then on there are addresses that indicate mileage and there are old historic farms or homesteads that are named 70 Mile House, or 108 Mile House and all the addresses on the Alcan Hwy are according to the miles posted as the original highway was built......guess that's why the book is named "Milepost"....ha ha.

We have a long way to go and I hope you will be going along for the ride.

Let's have fun,

Dee
