Metzler Mayhem travel blog

We are in the last month of our wonderful stay in southern Texas. There are a few things we would still like to do before we leave the Valley including go to New Progresso Mexico one more time so we can bring back a few items that you cannot get in the U.S. and there are a few places we would like to go eat as well.

Last weekend we went to South Padre and had a wonderful time. Avonelle was generous enough to give us a ticket for a boat ride that she had won at her park. We stopped by her place first thing to help trim some branches and pick up the ticket. Had a wonderful short visit and then we went on our way. We drove onto the beach and parked the truck. Had to put the 4 wheel drive to work in the soft sand but made it through just fine. The dogs had a wonderful time playing in the sand and water. We took video of Emma swimming out in the waves to get the ball and Moses standing in the shallow part waiting to chase her back. He is such a little herding dog. haha. After enough time in the sun we headed to the main drag for a bite to eat. We ate at a place called Amberjack's which was right on the water. I had wonderful Mahi Mahi fish tacos and Nathan had yummy cheesey enchiladas. We spent the rest of the afternoon shopping and looking around and it couldn't have been a day at the beach without some ice cream. The temperature stayed at about 73 degrees all day. Our boat ride was scheduled for 5 o'clock so we got to Pirate's landing at about 4:30 and watched the people fishing off the docks. The boat ride consisted of a large scale speed boat (for those of you interested in the size of the engines: twin 500 horse power engines) the driver said we were up to about 55mph out on the water which seems pretty fast for a boat. We sat in the back which was fun because we got a little bit wet at times from the spray. They took us around to various spots near the island and we even got to see dolphins which is not usually part of the ride. It was the perfect boat ride for us as we both love speed. All in all it was a successful wonderful day!

This week has been very interesting for the both of us as there has been a lot going on. We moved to a different location at the campground. Now we are closer to the main clubhouse and have a little more shade. Hopefully our A/C won't be kicking on so much as it warms up. Nathan is beginning to plan for our trip home. It's a little early but that is what boredom does to you. He got the windows in the car tinted, researched the shortest route home and is in the process of researching some GPS/rear camera options for our big long train.

.......and now for the big news.......

Yes, it is official. It finally happened. On February 18th Nathan proposed. Let me give you a second while you gasp in shock because you thought it would never happen......

It was a huge surprise to me and the events leading up to it are quite comical. I'll try and make it brief. Our original plan was to go out with some neighbors friday night, however that fell through so I suggested going out to eat. We had discussed that we would go to PF Chang's at some point over the weekend because we had not been able to celebrate Valentine's as Nathan had just flown in that weekend. As far as I was concerned we really didn't need to celebrate. Him coming home was a good enough present for me, but he insisted. I later realized why. lol. So anyway, I suggested that we go that night when I got off work. We had not made reservations so when we got there it was an hour wait. (This hour wait becomes funny later) We finally got in to eat and had a wonderful meal. When the bill came Nathan grabbed it right away and put it in his lap. I being clueless yelled at him to give me my fortune cookie because I needed to know what my future held. Finally he handed me my fortune cookie and began to pretend to inspect the bill. I had a heck of a time with the stupid cookie and finally had to eat part of it to get the slip of paper out. At one point while I was struggling I noticed him staring at the bill and thought something was wrong with the charges so I leaned over to look at it not realizing he was actually watching me. When I finally got the cookie apart and in pieces I was shocked. This small slip of paper that generally contains odd words of wisdom or fortune read a little different this time around. It said: "Trista, will you marry me?" I stared at it speechless for a few moments and could only keep contemplating how he pulled this off. He then dug the ring out of his pocket and slid it across the table. No he did not get down on one knee but there was no need to, I was in enough shock without a room full of people staring at me. I couldn't believe that I didn't see it coming. I had always told him that there was no way he would surprise me, but he did and it was very good.

Now then back to that hour wait....he had the fortune cookies (two cause he was going to give them to the waiter to put in the bill but it didn't work out) in the pocket of his sweatshirt. During our wait we walked over to Barnes and Noble and walked around and he said the whole time they were making noise in his pocket. Then we walked back to the restaurant and stood outside and he kept turning away from me because he was afraid I would rub against him or put my hand in his pocket and find them. He admitted that he was far more nervous than he thought he would be and was super relieved when he finally pulled it off. I told him that the best part was he could propose 11 more times because he had to order a minimum of 12 cookies. lol.

Now about the ring. I got to pick it out. It was one of the things that we did before we left Gillette. The center diamond was Nathan's grandma's from her wedding ring. We still have the original as well. It is a simple ring but I love it and Nathan loves that he didn't have to spend as much as he thought he would.

The date: We actually started planning this last fall so the wedding will be September 10th, 2011 in Sheridan Wyoming. So now we have 6 months to go and lots to do.

Well, that is all the information I can type for the moment so I will leave it at that...

May God bless you in every way, may you always find strength in him.

xoxo
