Jason and Dawn - Around the world 2011 travel blog

Day 24 (Mar 2) Island of Kaui'i. Our flight was on a small jet propelled plane which took us over the islands of Molokini and Oahu on the way to our destination. We had the most wonderful coffee on board which is only produced on Molokini, Coconut Roast with the smell and flavor being delicious. So delicious in fact Jason got us refills. As we came in to land the large valley's of Kaui'i greeted us. Lush green in abundance and amazing blue ocean all around.

We landed in Lihu'e airport and immediately made our way to the rental car place to receive our compact economy sized limosine. Drove downtown to the State building (which was not easy to find at all) to buy our camping permit for the week. Total cost $43 and the server at the counter told us to do all we could within the next couple of days because come Saturday and Sunday it's going to be pouring rain. So once paid and we received our permit we found a Wal Mart to get our weeks supply of water and groceries. We found a Costco to grabbed some roasted chicken and fresh berry smoothies.

Kaui'i is overrun with wild Chickens. There are so many that in the tourist books they warm you to have ear plugs because the male roosters compete with each other to see who can out do the other crowing. They are everywhere, as we drove you could see male, female and lots of little baby chics running all over looking for food.

We started on our way up the coast to Kapa'a to stop at the coconut market place. Here we saw a live Hula show, young teenage girls with their teacher danced to live Hawaiian music sung by a local artist who lives on the island. I cannot remember her name but she has released many CD's. It was a colorful display of authentic Hawaiian Hula. We both enjoyed the show and I got my photo taken with the lovely hula dancers.

We continued on our way up the coast to Kilauea, where we found our campgroung "Anini" beach park. The server at the counter told us not many had registered for a permit so it shouldn't be busy, well as we got closer all we could see was tent city. Obviously not many have paid and some are squatting. None the less we found a spot close to the ocean under a tree, pitched our tent and sat at our picnic table eating homemade roasted chicken wraps. Excellent supper. Sipped on our wine until all gone and retired for the evening.
