Buenos Dias! After being in Mazatlan tied to a dock for 8 months Babeeze is finally free. Back tracking a bit we returned to Edmonton for a cold snowy Christmas and enjoyed a wonderful time with family and friends. I had the second carpal tunnel surgery and Rene had some throat surgery. We remained in Canada until New Years Eve and then returned to Mazatlan. Though it was great to be back the weather was not all that balmy. The swimming pool was passed over and the hot tub became the hot ticket item. Long pants and sweaters had to be dug out and worn in the morning and by 4 o'clock heaven forbid. With the high humidity and cool temperatures we were forced to run our furnace in the boat to keep warm. One night it was 36 degrees and some fruit and vegetable crops in the area had frost damage. Many of the Mexican people wore big jacket and complained that it was mucho frio ( much cold) and they were right. We continued to make boat repairs . Our water heater sprung a leak and we had to have a new one sent down it never ceases to amaze me that boat parts have such a short life and cost such big bucks. An 11 gallon water heater for $1350.00 I am sure it must be not only be stainless steel but also be gold lined. Other exciting happenings in January....For almost a week in Mid month the marina was inundated by hundreds of plate sized, very pink moon jelly fish. They were beautiful to watch as they stayed close to the boats for hours I understand this species does not sting. I enjoyed a visit from a couple of my former student. My debit card was copied at Walmart . Someone in Ecuador had a great time for two days and managed help themselves to almost $2700.00 out of our bank account. I happy to report that our bank was wonderful and all funds were returned. Sunday February 6th we leave for a wedding and to visit family in Cabo. At first its great, we sail and enjoy ourselves then the weather begins to change as we venture farther into the sea. Winds on our nose and high confused seas made the next 30 hours far from pleasant. We arrived tired and beat up at San Jose Del Cabo late Monday afternoon. We shower and went straight to bed. Though dirty and full of salt Babeeze had weather the trip like a pro. San Jose Del Cabo marina, 19 miles from Cabo San Lucas is brand new. With its tastefully decorated walk ways and miles of white sandy beaches it will be our home for a few days. Friday we rent a car and drive over to the Riu hotel in Cabo for the wedding. It so much fun to see my 4 year old grandson all spiffed up carrying the ring down the aisle. The wedding was lovely. Saturday morning we take Babeeze to Cabo and anchor in front of the Rui . My son Brian, Adam , MacKenna and Avery come aboard for a ride. It's great to have them on the boat and as luck would have it we caught two nice sized Sierra Mackerel. We anchor at Cabo and even have our first Mexican overnight guests. The well protected waters of the bay at Cabo is the home to hundreds of whales this time of the year. We were luck enough to see several whales completely breach. It is hard to believe that something that huge can completely leap out of the water. Wednesday the 16th we leave very noise Cabo for 45 mile trip over to Bahia Los Frailes. This large bay with its exceptional view of the rugged surrounding coastline and inland mountains is the home of the only hard coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. With only three boat in the whole place it is heavenly quiet. The next morning I am awakened at 7 am by what I think are shots. I poke my head out of the hatch, there are at least 100 eagle ray leaping and somersaulting--- the loud splats as they belly flop back into the water was amazing. What a way to wake up. This dance went on all day. While enjoying the full moon later that evening we were lucky enough to hear the whales calling to each other and hear them splashing back into the water as they leaped. Those crazy rays could still be seen leaping and splashing in the brilliant moon light. The next day we tried our hand at fishing but no luck. Saturday when we pulled anchor a 6 inch seahorse was hanging on the chain. The 46 miles over to Muertos was uneventful. A few dolphins, turtle and the odd whale helped to break the boredom. Sunday we woke up to a howling wind, we will have a quiet day aboard. Around 4 in the afternoon the winds drop, and we were enjoying sitting in the sun when a pod of a least 150 dolphins charged in and just as quickly out of the anchorage, chasing a school of fish. They churned the waters up just like a boat. Amazing to see. Monday we travelled 48 miles through the San Lorenzo Channel towards La Paz. When trying to deploy the main sail it jammed in the mast slot. Unable to get the sail in or out gave me some anxious moments when the wind picked up to nearly 20 knots. Lucky for us a strong wind gust spanked the sail a good one and it broke free going all the way out. Yeah! We spent several days enjoying a couple more of the beautiful anchorages here. The waters in the Sea of Cortez can be a unique shade of blue. We are currently in La Paz. Carnival begins thursday so it should be fun.
