Arrived here around 11am. Went to the Publix Grocery store to stock up for the week. Nice grocery store, but we noticed there were a lot of OLD people there.
We had to take a barge over to the island. The trip is only about 50 yards, but they charge $55.00 for a round trip. You can buy a book of passes for $34.00 each and we got several from the owner. What a gold mine for the barge owners. It is the only way on and off the island, but it keeps tourists and the riff-raff off of the island. No one locks their doors.
We arrived at the house just before noon. The owners were still here along with the cleaning ladies. We visited with them for a bit and got a tour of the house. We discovered that the man who owns the house graduated from Lakewood High School and was in the Navy. John spent a fair amount of time BSing with him. I had told them that John was a handyman and needed things to do, to fix, to build, etc. He had considered leaving a list for him.
We were pleasantly surprised. The house is more than we hoped for....very nice and very clean. We have a nice little pool off the back of the house. All of the houses on the island are on stilts according to code, including ours. John's pour knee is being tested with the stairs.
We took a tour of the island on the golf cart that we rented from the owners. We were really glad that we rented the cart. Most of the roads are sand paths and aren't suited for cars. It was a lot of fun just driving up and down the roads and seeing the houses. You can see that the housing crisis has hit here because there are a lot of homes for sale. We collected a few of the info sheets on the houses and we didn't see any for less than $695,000. We saw a vacant lot for sale on the Gulf for $699,000....way over our budget.
There is a resort at the North end of the island called Palm Island. We went there for lunch. We had a good lunch and when we told the bartender that we fogot to get some limes at the grocery store, he gave us 2 limes for free.
We hung around the house for the afternnoon and then took a golf cart ride at sunset. We watched the sun go down at 6:25 and then went to the Palm Island Resort for a nightcap. The place is packed because it is the only business on the island.
When we were out riding around we met Mango, a beautiful golden retriever. He saw that we had a tennis ball in our cart and became our friend. We will go back and see him. We want to find out where Mango came from, so that we can contact the breeder when we are ready. We met another golden during our ride.
Everyone is sooooo friendly on the island. We met a couple from St. Paul, Minnesota. When I told them that I lived in Farmington, they knew exactly where we lived. We got back to the house around 7:30, made BLTs and ate some ice cream. Off to bed so we can start over tomorrow.
