| We picked up our VW Golf, our companion for the next month, in Berlin..and found out that we were forbidden to take the car into a number of countries we were planning on visiting (oops...not good planning on our part). We were able to get an exception to drive in the new EU countries of Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovenia. If we decide to go further south, we will have to park the car and take the train. Our first stop out of Berlin was Dresden. We were expecting Eastern European 1940s/50s construction after the city was flattened in World War II. Instead, there are massive restoration projects underway, and the city is well on its way to its old glory in time for its 800th anniversary in 2006. |
