Jason and Dawn - Around the world 2011 travel blog

Woke up this morning to a wonderful sunrise (first one of the trip). Once we got the tent packed up, we started to eat breakfast in the car, next thing you know, the car and everything around us was shaking! Thanks to the kindle and the power of the internet, we were able to immediately find out the active volcano had just produced a 3.6r ichter scale earthquake... not a huge quake, but fun nonetheless. We later found out by a park ranger that there were 28 earthquakes yesterday alone, and that the volcanoe has been acting up quite a bit. Last night, the volcanoe reached a record height for the lava levels.

After the quake, we headed out to the visitor centre and went on a tour provided by George, a 19 yer old hawaiian native. George was quite entertaining and informative. We learned much about plant species on the island and it's creation by the volcanoes. He also showed us the only known tree to close it's receptors when threatened by sulfer fumes from the volcanoes. During the tour, 2 ios hovered above us (an io is a native hawaiian hawk) George got quite excited about this as it is very good luck when this bird passes over somebody and especially so when they call at the sa.e time (which they did)

After the tour, we made our way to punalu'u beach, which is a completely black sand beach where sea turtles can be seen. We saw a bunch of turtles playing in the waves.... this was very neat to see and a highlight for us! After this, we made our way to Miloli'i, where e will be spending the night by the ocean waves under the moonlight.

Thanks for all of our comments and well wishes. Keep them coming ;)
