It is always a pleasure to have someone to see all of these places that are just around the corner from us every day because even though you don’t ever take anything in life for granted, especially in this industry – seeing them again through someone else’s eyes reminds you of the beauty and incredible history that surrounds us as we grind our way through life.
Keita and i walked miles of the waterfront at Viareggio checking out the market stalls full of winter clothing, shoes and scarves before taking off for Pisa about half an hour out of town. (actually i think we did the markets before we went to Lucca the day before)
I managed to find a park just outside the wall that runs around the area and as we walked from shade to sunlight along the cobbles we had our heads down negotiating the walkways when we finally look up and rising like a phoenix from the ashes stands the incredible Leaning Tower of Pisa just in front of us.
Standing 60m high and at one point it did lean at 10degrees but not sure if that has been rectified a bit by all the work, but the marble was truly gleaming white and pale grey in the weak winter sun. No heavy clouds in the sky so the incredible blue was a fantastic backdrop to show off the wonders of Pisa.
We left Pisa bound for Portofino about an hour or so away and it was closed up like a clam, so unfortunately we didn’t get the lunch we were looking forward to but did manage to climb up the hill to see the sights again.
