I’d heard that the west coast of the Algarve (the “other” Algarve) was stunning but I was not prepared for how beautiful it would be. The beaches are enormous, and beautiful, and not developed at all, because it’s all part of a protected natural park. The Portugese have no problems with free camping, and although there were a handful of motor-homes on each beach we visited, we still managed to find some quiet spots for ourselves. There are plenty of villages along the way, nothing special or beautiful, just ordinary towns going about their business. Inland, the area around Monchique was stunning, miles of cork oak and eucalyptus forests and not much else, but we stuck to the beaches for camping. Nick even managed to try out his new fishing rod (although I must point out that he did not catch anything and those shrimp he’s cooking on the cobb he bought from the fishmonger!). You should have seen the one that got away though.

But after a few nights of no showers and visits into the bushes in the dead of night, it was great to get back to civilisation and we’ve stopped a couple of nights in Lagos to get ourselves in order before we get to the flat.

So, we go into the flat on the 26th, and we get a week by ourselves before Mark and Heather come out to visit on the 2nd February (can’t wait). We’ll be able to use the flat as a base for visiting the Algarve and the Lower Alentejo region of the country, and it won’t be half bad having possession of a bath again.
