Jan 9th Miami

Getting up at 4.30 am was never one of my strongest points, but when you have to check in at 6.0 am there is little choice. I made it to the airport in good time and the first leg flight was on schedule. So everything was going well until I came to board the plane with my one “carry-on” and my one allowed personal item – a bag over my shoulder carrying things which I need to access easily and which won’t fit into my wheelie camera bag. Although the two items are allowed, new federal aviation regulations have dictated that you can’t actually take them into the cabin with you. The wheelies have to be “gate-checked”. My wheelie is a camera bag containing all my valuable equipment as well as my laptop and I NEVER part with it. But I had no choice. I took out the laptop and squeezed it into my shoulder bag and crossed my fingers that my camera equipment would make it to Miami in one piece.

So here I am in Miami. Everything appears to be in the bag. I just hope it wasn’t thrown around. I guess I will have to wait to find out if thing still works properly. Travelling really does get more and more stressful!

Chicago

So it seems that the “new Federal Aviation Regulations” only apply when you board in Freeport. I carried my wheelie and personal item onto the Chicago flight with no problem. It was on time and here I am in Chicago waiting for my flight to Manchester. Unfortunately, it is quite along wait – about four hours or more – but I guess I’m used to that and I brought some work to keep me busy en-route.
