Flinders Chase National Park

Hello again!

Today was our exploring day on the island. We woke up to about twenty different birds. They were so annoying and loud and they made the weirdest noises. Some sounded like animals, or people, or burps, and they woke us up at about eight! We all showered, then got on the road. We stopped at the visitors center for Flinders Chase National Park. We ate lunch there and bought souvenirs. We learned that there was a fire in 2007 where 117 lightning bolts struck the island and started fires. The fires wiped out most of the park, but it was good because the bush could then start fresh. After the visitors center we drove to Admirals Arch. We walked down the boardwalk and saw islands and crashing waves. There were rocks with New Zealand sea lions, which were darker than the Australian ones. The arch is the breeding ground for the sea lions, so it was very stinky. The arch was completely naturally made out of stone and gave a magnificent view of a beach. It was very pretty and we got some great shots. We were happy it wasn’t sunny because it would be very hot. After the arch we drove to the Remarkable Rocks. The rocks were formed from erosion and look like sculptures. The rocks were very detailed and dropped right into the ocean so we had to be careful near the edges. We climbed up the rocks and took pictures, but it was extremely windy. The rocks were remarkable and looked out to the bush, the ocean, and a beach. The views were spectacular. When we were done at the rocks we drove to Vivonne Bay where we rented sand boards. We rented one toboggan and one board for a couple of hours. We drove to the Little Sahara, a huge sand dune. Of course, the sun came through so we were very hot climbing up the dune. The dune was about sixty feet high and it took us awhile to climb up the sand. Boarding was awesome though, the toboggan went fast and two people could go at once. The board was harder though, Dad was pretty good and so was I, and it took Greg a couple of tries before he made it all the way down. But, as soon as you went down, you had to climb back up again, so we only went about five times down. Then the wind picked up, it hurt to stand on the dune because the sand felt like a million tiny bullets on our legs. We would just sit and keep our eyes and mouths shut until the wind passed. Mom said we got very exfoiliated, our entire first layer of skin is gone! Overall the sandboarding was a good experience, but nobody liked being all sandy in the car. Before driving back to the campsite we stopped at a beach and a river. There were two people swimming so we thought it would be a good place to rinse off the sand. As soon as we stepped into the ocean we thought our feet were going to freeze, the water was so cold! We didn’t know how the people could be swimming, the water had to be about 45 degrees! We only walked about two inches into the water, Dad said “The water’s not that bad when you’re numb.” So we skipped the swimming and just drove back to the campsite. We made one quick pit stop at Hanson Bay, where they was another koala walk. Greg and Claire were sleeping so Dad stayed in the car with them while Mom and I checked it out. As soon as we walked in we saw about ten kangaroos, we took pictures and approached them. I even touched one! It was so cool to touch a wild kangaroo, Mom got it on video, me touching the kangaroo then scaring them all away. We walked for about a minute and saw one koala, but we decided not to do it because it was practically the same as our other koala walk. So we drove back to the campsite. We showered again, it took forever to get all the sand out of my hair. After showering we made dinner, Italian chicken and beef schnitzel with mashed potatoes. Dinner was delicious and then we played some cards before going into the tent. We saw more wallabies and kangaroos in the dark. We got ready then went to sleep after a long day of exploring. We miss everyone!
