Penguin Center

Ferry to Kangaroo Island

Fairy Penguins

Hello!!!

Today was our travel day. We woke up in Ayers Rock, packed up the tent and our belongings, and then made it to the Cornellen Airport for our 10:30 am flight. The flight took 45 minutes and we were served delicious biscuit cookies, we love Qantas! We arrived in Alice Springs after a terribly bumpy flight, for a 2-hour layover. We spent all that time on the Internet with the free Wi-Fi. We were all connected. Then we boarded another plane to Adelaide that would take about 2 hours. That plane ride we were served lunch, every Qantas flight gives you free food. ☺ After we arrived in Adelaide, we rented a car and drove down to Cape Jervis, on the way we saw our first kangaroos that weren’t road kill At Cape Jervis we boarded a ferry that would take us to Kangaroo Island, where we would be spending the next three nights. The boat ride was 45 minutes, and rocked the entire way. Thank god for Dramamine or we would have all been puking off the boat. When we arrived at Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island, we drove to the Penneshaw Campground and set up our tent. We ate dinner, who says you can’t cook gnocchi with a grill? Then we went to the Penguin Walk. In Penneshaw they have hundreds of little fairy penguins, which are small and blue. We went with a ranger to see the penguins, which only come out at dark. We saw dozens of teenage penguins, with little feathers. The teenage penguins, 7 weeks old, can’t dive or go in the water yet, because they are not waterproof. We also saw younger penguins; they were waiting for their parents to come home with food. We were able to watch two baby penguins be fed by their dad. As soon as the saw their dad they started squeaking and were so loud. They all but tackled him and he fed them with regurgitated fish. We saw a penguin on the boardwalk and we had to wait further up until he passed. We saw penguins that were molting, that means they are growing new feathers, so they aren’t able to eat for up to three weeks. It was very funny; the molting penguins were very grumpy. We admired the penguins, they were very cute and we don’t see them in Arlington Heights. After our tour we walked back to our campsite, played cards in the tent and went to sleep. Today was our first time on vacation that we had to wear sweats and jackets. But, then again it was still about 50 degrees. Bye!
