To the Land of Adventure and Beyond! Jessica's Great Journey to New Zealand. travel blog

The islands of New Zealand, creatively named the "North" and "South" islands

I can't believe it's almost here! Nine months ago, I had sort of a Third-life crisis when I turned 30 and realized I've never been anywhere or done anything. My mom died at only 50 years old and, if God-forbid I were to suffer the same fate, I only have 20 years left to live, so I better get a move-on.

I've always said I want to see and experience every nook and cranny the world has to offer and so, when I had this birthday realization, I booked a trip to New Zealand on a whim. I was tired of waiting for the "one days" when I would have enough time and disposable income to do something huge. I was tired of waiting for a friend to commit to going with me. I got sick of everyone always saying, "Yeah, that sounds like so much fun! Let's do it..." and then, when the time comes to set a date for a trip or put money down, conveniently everyone stops answering emails and calls. I'm independent and I'm a total adrenaline junkie...I could do a trip to the "Adventure Capital of the World" by myself if need be.

Then my friend Megan heard me talking about my plan and signed on. I found a travel buddy who is willing to commit and I wasn't even looking! The best part? She's just as crazy and adventurous as I am...our new motto is "I'm adventurous dammit!" :-)

We put our deposit down several months ago and have been wrapped up in life since. It's only in the last week that this trip has started to feel real. And I'm SO excited. My one allowed 44-pound bag is packed and by the front door. Apparently, I'll be tackling 16 days on the other side of the world with very limited shoes and clothing. It's gonna be interesting.

Megan and I plan to maintain our travel blogs during the trip, so stay tuned for daily updates about our adventures zorbing, black water rafting, glacier hiking, glowworm caving, bungee jumping and Lord of the Rings touring. lol. It's going to be an unforgetable trip and I can't freakin' wait!
