This state park has the best views of the Colorado River just prior to the junction with the Green River. The park is named after an incident that occurred many, many years ago. A young Indian girl, who had a favorite black horse (actually a pony, but the Indians did not have a word for a pony) was forced to attend Indian school in Moab. She was not able to take her favorite horse to town. While she was at school, the horse died just before she was to return to the area. Her mother told the chief to build a large burn pile from wood and burn the horse before the girl returned. Due to high winds, the mother gathering pine nuts and the chief just being too busy smoking his pipe, the horse was still on the burn pile when the girl returned from school. The girl’s life was changed forever by the sight of her favorite horse on the burn pile. Therefore the point was forever called Dead Horse Point.
So Sad.
