October 21, 2010 – Toad Suck State Park, Conway, AR
How could we possibly NOT stay here? I was afraid to ask how the park got its name but this was a US Army Corps of Engineers park and, as most of them are, was quite nice with level sites – perhaps not as level as a Marine might do it according to Sgt. Bob, but nice just the same. The campground was located in the middle of nowhere right at a lock and dam on the Arkansas River and we were able to put our kayaks in and paddle down the Arkansas River. There was quite a stiff wind going downstream but there were numerous stone jetties along the river that created nice sandy coves. The river itself is quite deep and only in the cove areas was it shallow enough to land and get out of the boats. We spent an enjoyable night there but could not get any satellite TV coverage – no big deal.
The campground was staffed by workkampers who were quite nice and one of the volunteers brought his Arkansas River map showing the segments of the river from dam to dam so we could see where we were and where to go in the kayaks. It was a thoughtful, nice thing to do unsolicited.
