Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse MonumentOct 11, 2010

| Got to Rapid City and went to the WalMart and got set up. There was hardly a parking place open. It was the busiest WalMart I have ever seen. We decided to wait until Monday to go to Mt Rushmore so we just relaxed and watched TV. I decided to go to the store and get a few things but it was so packed all day. It looked like Christmas eve shopping at home. shoulder to shoulder people. About 90 percent native American. Some people were pushing around 2 and 3 carts. One lady had about 5 of the large Folgers coffee containers and her other cart was full of soup and milk clear to the top and the bottom had 3 10 pound bags of potatoes. Some of the shelves were even cleared out. When I finally got to the checkout counter I asked the girl there what was going on and she told me it was the first of the month and a weekend and a lot of people got their food stamps and also the farmers were coming in to town to stock up for the month because there was no stores out where they farm. Wow what an experience! We got up early and headed off to Mt Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument. It cost $10.00 to park at Mt Rushmore but you got in free. RVs and buses have to pay $50.00 to park. It was really neat and we got many great pictures. The Forest was amazing and the ground sparkled like someone had thrown diamonds and glitter on the ground. Even the hills sparkled. It was all the mica and quartz in the ground. The Highlight of the day for me was the Crazy Horse Monument. It was Native American Day so there was quite a crowd. It was so interesting and the museum was really cool. There was a bus that would take you all the way to the front part of the monument but we didn't go to it. I just wanted to hang around the museum and look at all of the neat things they had there. The monument is still not finished but after the sculptor who started it passed away his family took it over and are still working on it. I hope it is finished before I am too old to see it again. It was a beautiful and fun day and we headed back to the RV to relax. We Had dinner and watched some TV and turned in for the night. Will leave Rapid City tomorrow. |
