Shiloh 2010

Gate to cemetery at Shiloh

Road Grant and men came up from river

Mass grave

I drove over to Shiloh today, what a lovely site. It was a huge and nasty battle, over 10000 casualties in all in a three day period. I had always wondered what reason the battle would have been held there. Turn out, that the two major rail lines of the Confederacy crossed at Corinth (a days march south) and also it was on the TN river which also was a transportation hub. Gen Grant moved his army down by river boats and landed there at Shiloh. He ended up getting his lunch eaten by the Rebs, really lost a lot of men the first day. He even left a group(two divisions) behind to die at a place they called the “Hornet’s Nest” due to the sound of the bullets. Well, they bought him time and two more armies arrived the next day to help-Gen Buell and quite a few more men. They brought up artiliry and gunboats and won the second day. Good descriptions of battle on Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Shiloh
