So today in guadalajara I saw the largest parade of my life. Thousands of people took to the main street of Guadalajara at 6 am. This is a very religious, cultural, and revered event for Guadalajans.
Every year a statue of the Virgin of Zapopan journeys from church to church in guadalajara from June through October 12th when it is slowly carried back to her home in the Basillica of Zapopan. This parade is not like any other. Thousands follow in the streets to make the journey with her. Dancing and singing, praying and cheering. Buses don't run, the roads are closed off.
So there i was, possibly the only one walking in the complete opposite direction in order to get to class, fighting my way through this parade of well wishers, praying for peace, health and happiness. "Excuse me please, where can I find the short bus? "what's that? you'll pray for me?" LOL!! On the brighter side I can say that I saw the entire parade and still made it to class. Short bus, I think not! Prayer, maybe.
What an amazing site this procession was! the indigenous costumes and native dancing was truly inexplicable!!! Half way through i saw Winnie the Poo and shrek moving along with the Aztec dancers. Picture that. I love it!!
viva viva viva
this city is truly alive
