We leave restful Espinho to return to Spain and today is the Spanish National Holiday and the drive is easy. Again, hundreds of kilometers of road construction till we arrive in Zamora, considered to be a quintessential city of Old Castile – a medieval frontier town.

The lodging we choose is the Hosteria Real de Zamora – a building that was the former headquarters of the Inquisition; it wass also the home of the explorer Pizarro. The 600-year old walls have a lot of tile work as well as dark paintings, all of religious themes. Outside our window is a Romanesque bridge dating from the 1300’s – we’ve been lucky again.

The temperature is in the 80’s (27) when we go out exploring. We walk through this Romanesque city finally having tapas in the Mayor Plaza. With the holiday, families are all out walking the cobbled streets. A special site is to discover what the huge nests are we’ve seen on tops of churches – cranes!
