We spent the morning tooling around the White Moutains, intending to head north to Hwy 2 (yes that's the same Hwy 2 in our area that goes to Leavenworth - it actually goes all the way across the country) and go across the middle of Maine to Acadia NP. As we were traveling through a highly commercialized area on the edge of the White Mountain Forest we saw a sign that said 62 miles to Portland, Maine. Knowing there was a road full of commercialization up ahead we decide to make a U turn and head onto the ocean drive from Portland to Acadia.
We meandered through some small towns and fairly quickly we were at the eastern seaboard. Our first stop at Yarmouth, ME netted us one of the traditional New England photos - the white church, fall colors and blue sky. Yeah, it may be cliched and overdone, but we sure had fun taking it for ourselves! It was getting stormy in NH, but here in Maine, it's beautiful blue sky and WARM! Wow, we haven't felt that in awhile.
Another roadfood stop and our first lobster shack - it is only a little less expensive than in the NW, but you can't beat eating lobster caught just this am overlooking a fishing wharf.
From here we made a quick stop in Freeport, ME - known for it's outlet stores and more importantly the home of LL Bean. We had to wander for a few minutes, then quickly headed north to stop for the night before heading along to coastline tomorrow.
