The best Cherry Garcia ever

Vermont fall colors

We've spent the last few days traveling South to North through the middle of Vermont along the east side of the Green Mountains. One of our scenic drive books says this route should take about 5 hours and 3 days later we've just finished it. Guess all those side roads and stops for fall color photos add a bit of time to it :) It's amazing to see the mountainsides full of fall color. We aren't seeing a lot of the really bright popping reds but the volume of color is incredible. Nothing like we see in the NW. The first day and a half we experienced a deluge of rain - one night it was so hard we were kept awake much of the night. But finally after 2 weeks on the road and constant rain we have had a day of no rain - woo hoo!

In addition to lots of fall colors, we enjoyed a stop at the Ben & Jerry's factory. It was a bit of a tourist trap, but we got to have the freshest cones of Cherry Garcia we have ever tasted - YUM.

Other roadfood stops in Vermont: Dot's in Wilmington, VT - we found this place in our Roadfood book and boy is it worth the stop and rave reviews. Homecooking at it's best.

The second roadfood stop in Quechee, VT - after a 20 mile sidetrip to enjoy Irish eats at Simon Pearce, it did not live up to our expectations, first of all there wasn't a trace of Irish on the menu and second, it was very posh and highfalutin - and if you know us, that's not our kind of place. We enjoyed the food (because we were too timid to get up and walk out after seeing the menu) but paid way too much. Dot's is way more our kind of joint.
