The Scoop on MaMa Lou Tues. 9/28/10

Today was a sea day. The weather was rainy and windy so we played all day on the ship. Boy, I haven’t made a phone call or heard the news for a week. It’s kind of nice. I have not taken a nap in the past couple of days either, but I feel I’m gearing up for one. This evening Michael, the Head Deck Officer found Bob and I while we were sitting and watching people enjoy the Mexican Bar-B-Que. He told us MaMa Lou was on deck and if I still wanted to meet her, he would introduce us. Well, after we took a few pictures with her, I then sat and talked with her for about an hour. She did most of the talking, telling about her life. It’s quite a story. She lives on the ship most of the year, but does have a home in the Villages in Florida. She is a widow of a retired military officer. She has three sons who wanted her to go in a nursing home, as she tells it, so she ran away from home and made her home on the Holland American ships. She seems a bit eccentric, but does have a keen memory. She appears neat and clean and wears a fresh flower in her hair. Tonight they had a game show contest where you complete the lyrics to songs. The friend I was sitting with, Tamara, was chosen as an “unwilling” contestant. Well, she won. She has a beautiful voice and after singing “Nine to Five”, in full Dolly Pardon costume, she and the Cruise Director sang a duet to each other, “You Are So Beautiful.” I told her, she must have been an audience plant.
