hiking in Petit Jean SP

The remnants of hurricane Alex altered our plans. The parts of Kansas and Missouri we planned to visit were expected to have a week of rain, with up to 10” accumulating. We changed our minds and went directly east (get out of the path of the weather) into Arkansas to Petit Jean State Park – with, you guess it, an airstrip in the park.

Petit Jean is a beautiful park (crown jewel of AR’s system). We didn’t book reservations very far in advance so we could only get a site for 3 days in the newest part of the campground (weekend booked up). We planned to spend the 2 weekend days camped at the “fly in” campground at the airstrip. We only did that for one night because of some internal politics between the main campground operations and the contracted airstrip campground (and we were the only ones there). But it was really cool – we walked down the mile long runway at 10 p.m. under the stars in our pajamas. We went back to the main campground (older section) and stayed another three nights before moving on. We flew almost every day we were there.

We also went kayaking on the lake, and hiking on some of their trails. We even went "out" to dinner twice, once at the Rockefeller Conference Center, and once at the park lodge.
