The KILLER Bridge !

View of the Mississippi from the belly of the beast!

David takes on Goliath

9/21 I Just Can’t Bridge The Gap

The Jimmy Dykes State Park where we camped last night was a fantastic find; all of the sites had level asphalt pads AND, get this, a wooden deck with a built in grill! All of the sites were staggered so you didn’t feel like other campers surrounded you. We took advantage of their great laundromat and caught up on our washing. The state park also provided free wifi!! Louisiana really does a nice job with their parks and Florida needs to take a lesson from them on how to provide a great camping experience. Last night I was researching the bridges over the Mighty Mississippi and discovered that our initial plan of tackling the River via Baton Rouge and I10 would have put me onto a very long and high suspension bridge that is susceptible to long traffic delays and accidents. My research led me to change our course and head east over the Mississippi at Natchez where a shorter and less high-cantilevered bridge looked like the ideal crossing point. We made it over with no problem except that we found ourselves in Natchez without a plan to explore the city. I was so busy negotiating traffic and trying to find the highway directional signs that I ignored the Navigator’s suggestion that we at least have lunch here. Before I knew it, I was out of town and making our way down the road. I know the Navigator was disappointed and I felt bad about not stopping for lunch but this was only one of my stupid, inconsiderate missteps today. I needed gas and tried to pull into a gas station but the idiot at the pump I was waiting for started backing up instead of pulling forward. So, once again I blew my top at the idiocy of people and had to pull out of the station to avoid getting hit. The poor Navigator had to listen to one more of my unreasonable outbursts. I know this was stressing her out. We finally came to I55S and headed to I12, which eventually connects to I10E; we have successfully avoided Baton Rouge. The Navigator hooked us up with a state park in Mississippi but the GPS led us on a scavenger hunt and we ended up taking narrow back roads, which culminated in a closed road that was to take us to the state park. The GPS did the same thing last night when we were trying to get to the Jimmy Dykes State Park. Now this is twice in a row that this damn GPS screwed me up which led me to blow my top and have a royal meltdown. I HATE GPS’S. The poor Navigator has had to listen to my nonsense all day and has reached the end of her rope in trying to deal with me. Bless her for her patience. So, I turned the RV around and we headed back to I10 to hopefully find a place to land for the night. We finally found a campground in Gulfport, Mississippi (a big gambling mecca next to Biloxi). The campground is not of the best we ever camped in but at least we got off the road for the night. Hopefully tomorrow I can control my temper and make the remainder of the trip more pleasurable for Anita since she has been looking forward to doing this trip for over a year. I certainly don’t won’t to spoil the fun she had in the West here at the end and leave not-so-good memories of a great trip. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Amen.
