Glen Canyon Dam near Page, AZ
Today we drove the 200 plus miles to Cameron on the south side of Grand Canyon.
In route we stopped outside of Page to see the Glen Canyon Dam. At 710 ft tall, it is the nation’s second highest concrete arch dam – only Hoover Dam is higher by 16 ft. Built in the 60’s, the dam created Lake Powell from the Colorado River. Most of the Lake is in Utah, but provides recreation for the whole area. The lake was named for John Wesley Powell, who in 1869 led the first Colorado River expedition through the Grand Canyon.
Our campground is across the road and a part of the Cameron Lodge and Trading Post. We ate at the restaurant and tried the Navajo Taco. It was like a taco salad, except instead of a tortilla for the base it had Navajo fry bread. It’s something like thick pizza dough. Enormous!
