Sandy Riverfront RV Resort, Troutdale, OR
It was cool and overcast Thursday morning when we left Roseburg heading north to Troutdale. Halfway through our transit we stopped at a rest area and I was walking Little Bear when I saw another Schipperke bounding toward us! Bear and the little brown/black male looked so cute playing together; I went to get Scott so he could see the little Schip (only the 2nd of Bear’s breed we’ve met since Nov 09!)
We finished setting up in Troutdale about 2 PM; it seemed late for lunch so I suggested ice cream! We were fixing to walk to Troutdale when another Titanium 5th wheel parked in the site next door. Scott is always interested in meeting other Titanium owners so we went out to say hi. The wife told me they had driven through the gorge from Coeur d’Alene and I had no idea what she meant by ‘the gorge.’ We left to walk Troutdale’s downtown (3 blocks) and the outlet mall directly behind town. On our way back I purchased locally grown strawberries at a repurposed filling station. They are the sweetest strawberries, just like the strawberries I remember from childhood!
Friday I learned that ‘the gorge’ refers to The Columbia Gorge. I looked up the definition of gorge to find why the area isn’t called The Columbia River Gorge. The reason is the definition of gorge is land carved out by a river! Plus I learned gorge and canyon are somewhat interchangeable, depending on regional semantics. Interesting to think that if regional semantics were different we might have ended up with The Grand Gorge and The Columbia Canyon!
We drove Historic Highway 30 along the Columbia River and stopped at the Crown Point Vista House. With Little Bear we take turns staying outside with her while the other goes inside. At Vista House Scott went upstairs to the balcony to look at the river, on my turn I went downstairs to visit the gallery/gift shop. Our next stop was Latourell Falls, then Bridal Veil Falls where we hiked the trail to the falls and the scenic trail overlooking the river. We had lunch outside at Multnomah Falls, the most spectacular falls of the bunch. Scott was interested in the historic locks in the city of Cascade Locks so we walked around the locks (very windy). Scott drove back via I-85 and we passed a large RV towing an 18 foot vintage steamboat! You never know what you are going to see on the road!
