Heart of Alaska RV Caravan travel blog

Today we travelled back to Destruction Bay in Kluane, YT. We had travelled the road in the other direction taking two days, 28 & 29 July. I think more road repairs have been made, but it was still a rollercoaster ride. I hit a few frost heaves that caused the springs to bottom out. I missed most of the potholes which was nice. The rough roads were much harder on the big rigs and they had to drive much more slowly than I did. Jim in the pickup camper was the only one here when we arrived.

The route today was fairly flat. There were lots of trees and lots of lakes and streams. It is certifiably early fall here. Many of the Aspin trees have yellow leaves already. There are patches of yellow all over the mountains. Evelyn thinks that we can see a fresh coat of snow on the higher peaks. It has been cold enough in the valley to believe that it could snow up there.

We got through the boarder into the Yukon Territory, Canada with no problems. We had to wait in line for some time before we reached the window. Once there she looked at our passports and asked where we lived and if we had any firearms. I was glad that we didn’t get pulled aside for a search again.

Tonight the park owner gave us dinner and entertainment. He served roast beef that looked like and tasted like Santa Maria tri-tip. He had a green salad and potato salad and hot rolls all of which he had made himself. For dessert we had a choice of a berry-rhubarb cobbler or an apple cobbler. It was all good.

It seems that in the winter the guys around here have little to do. The owner and three of his buddies have formed a band. His lead guitar was our entertainment. He sang a lot of the old country songs that we all know. He sang some gospel songs that most of us know as well. It was fun. Unfortunately, he quit singing before we were ready to stop listening.
