After we settled in last night, it was late when we went off to dinner. In fact maybe it was a little too late for Hot Springs as the restaurant we were sent to was closed, but they recommended the Springs Steakhouse located in a historic hotel. The food was wonderful. In fact we had hand cut filets with baked potatoes and vegetables for $7.95. Rita had a steak in Billings for $25.00 that was not nearly as good as this one. The waitress really took a shine to me, and I hope it was JUST my red hair if you know what I mean….
Our B and B is so large and comfortable. It is at the edge of downtown on a bluff overlooking the town lights. Everyone slept like babies. The only thing is the driveway, which is steep and full of giant ruts. Our hostess provided homemade bread, coffee cake and granola with melon and juice. She even made dog treats for the girls.’’
This morning is brilliant and clear. The air is cool and crisp. We drive through Wind Caves National Park and see lots of prairie dogs, buffalo and prong horn antelope. The terrain is hilly and beautiful. The Black Hills are beautiful and covered with pine trees. We are both surprised by Mount Rushmore as we thought it would be more barren, but it is surrounded by lush green hills and trees. We love Mount Rushmore which took 18 years to complete and is very impressive.
Next we go to Crazy Horse which is a mountain carving work-in-progress. It is being built as a tribute to all Indian peoples without federal or state funds. The carvings are much larger than Mount Rushmore (all four heads would fit on the head of Crazy Horse) and the carving continues still. The sculptor is deceased by his wife and seven of his ten children continue the work. There is a very nice Indian Museum attached to the visitor center. This monument is a tribute to a dream and that alone is enough to make it worth a visit.
We stopped early today…let the dogs enjoy the B & B with all the smells, terrain, and rocks….there is a horse here, also a skunk…but we are staying clear of it. We always have fun, and today is no different….it is actually hot today in the sun. Oh Rockport you are going to kill us! Also some mosquitoes…what is that??? We are getting ready to return to our beloved home with heat, sun, mosquitoes, wind, palm trees, but best of all, our wonderful friends and family. We are ready to be with those who say,“Ya’ll.” The eyes of Texas are upon us….soon. Hook.’Em Horns!
Vacation will end but we will be happy to be home and see our friends! Tomorrow we will go to Kansas and stay overnight, then on to Abilene, and then home to Rockport!
We are expecting a parade, Sea Queens, and a festival to greet us!!!!!!!!
