Montana Roadside

Campsite at Spring Creek

Boulder River at the Campground

There is no real route planned; we are making this up as we go, with a couple of “sights” in mind.

We drove on teeny Route 464 through the Blackfeet Nation and more open range to Highway 2 to Interstate 15 (a “big road,” so Marcia drove for a while), to 191 south to 298.

The Blackfeet were described on a historic marker as fierce defenders of what was their own and loyal allies if not threatened.

Another marker identified Camp Disappointment, the northern-most point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. They had been hoping to find that the Marias River went beyond the 49th parallel, which would extend the Louisiana Purchase. (Guess what?)

Did some shopping in Great Falls, at the RV-friendly WalMart, happy to see some better prices. Then we were on our way through more ranches, deer and antelope playing, and big sky. It was completely clear and sunny, about 78 degrees. We crossed the Yellowstone River (yes, that Yellowstone).

We signed up for two nights at the Spring Creek Campground and Trout Ranch in Big Timber on the Boulder River, between two mountains. It’s very pretty with huge old trees, nice long sites, green grass, and two stocked trout ponds.
